Christmas energy consumption + LESS CO2

The Energy Team wishes to remind schools and academies to take appropriate action to minimise energy consumption and spend over the Christmas break. Also, save more energy with the free energy saving programme, LESS CO2!

The Energy Team wishes to remind schools and academies to make appropriate adjustments to avoid unnecessary energy consumption over the Christmas break. This will benefit your school’s budget and help reduce carbon emissions.

Please ensure that your site managers and caretakers take action to ensure that your system operates in the most cost effective mode whilst no one is on site. For many schools this will simply involve switching the system to holiday mode. However, please check that the holiday mode settings are appropriate. If you’re unsure what you need to do then speak to your controls contractor.

Don’t forget to make provision for frost protection, should air temperatures fall particularly low. Take the opportunity to check that your frost-stat (thermostat that controls at what temperature at which frost protection engages) is set at an appropriate temperature. Usually this is around 5oC. If set too high this can cause considerable energy wastage.

It is best practise to ensure any non-essential electrical equipment is switched off over the Christmas break, particularly if you have an electrically heated site (again making provision for frost protection). Please take a walk around your school before the building is closed to switch off any equipment that is not needed during the holiday.

For free advice, resourcing and mentoring on how to save energy at your school, I recommend signing up to the Ashden LESS CO2 programme. This is a valuable, popular and FREE programme of four workshops that will help you save energy and money, and get your pupils and staff engaged in sustainability. To register your interest, visit the LESS CO2 website. East Sussex’s fifth programme will be starting on Wednesday 9th January 2019.

If you have any queries about the above or energy consumption at your school in general, feel free to get in touch with the Energy Team.

Lastly, we’d also like to take this opportunity to wish you a relaxing Christmas and we look forward to speaking to you again in the New Year.
