Employing unqualified teachers who achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) retrospectively (i.e. during the summer holidays).

A reminder to schools that if you employ an unqualified teacher during term 6 with the intention of moving them to a qualified teacher position from 01 September, you must pay the individual the difference between the salary they received as an unqualified teacher and the salary they would have been entitled to receive once qualified, from the date QTS was obtained. Please note this also applies at other times of the academic year.

Paragraph 18 of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document stipulates that upon gaining QTS, an unqualified teacher must be transferred onto a salary within the main pay range for teachers. For an unqualified teacher who gains QTS retrospectively, a lump sum must be paid to them for the difference between the salary the individual received as an unqualified teacher and the salary they would have been entitled to receive once qualified, from the date QTS was obtained.

This means for schools employing unqualified teachers during term 6 with the intention of moving them to a qualified teacher contract from 01 September, once the unqualified teacher has obtained QTS (and this could be from 01 August or earlier), you will have to start paying them the equivalent of a salary on the main pay range for teachers.

For further information please see paragraph 18 of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.

If you have any unqualified teachers who do become qualified during the holidays, please inform your Employee Services contact who will be able to advise you on how to process this change.
