Free Trees for Schools

Defra ‘Free Trees for Schools’ project

To raise awareness with schools and encourage eligible schools to order them.

Defra have funded 400,000 trees to help primary schools provide outdoor learning opportunities and to enable pupils to plant a tree in their school grounds and watch it grow. This could be a small hedge to create a boundary or hide a fence, or a copse to create a forest schools/woodland area for example. If you don’t have enough space in your school grounds we can help you to find land close by to plant on.

You can order your trees directly via this link www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/freetrees or contact Gayle Amorowson directly for advice on what to plant and I can order them for you.

Applications can be made via the Woodland Trust website this term in order to receive your trees in March 2018. 90,000 tree packs were ordered last season and we had to close applications early, so please order as soon as possible to secure your trees:

The trees come in small, medium and large packs to grow a hedge or a copse.

Pupils planting and looking after the trees can help you achieve the ‘Biodiversity’ and 'School Grounds' topic of Eco Schools and/or support your Forest Schools work.

There are lots of great resources and ideas to support your school to plant these trees on the Woodland Trust website.  https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/get-involved/schools/

The Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools Award which helps to meet Forest schools and Eco school aims is available online for free and you get 2 points towards your Bronze award for planting trees! If you are interested, you can find out more here: https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/get-involved/schools/green-tree-school-award/

County Councillor Nick Bennett is keen to support the promotion of this project and would like to hear from schools who have taken up the offer or who have not been successful with their application. Contact Cllr.Nick.Bennett@eastsussex.gov.uk
